Jiu-Jitsu Essentials
August 24th - September 28th

This course is perfect for anyone wanting to learn some basic self defense from the perspective of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Classes will be held every Saturday from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, starting on Saturday, August 24th.
Jiu-Jitsu is widely recognized not only as a powerful martial art but also as an exceptional form of self-defense. Unlike other combat sports that emphasize striking, Jiu-Jitsu focuses on leverage, technique, and body mechanics, making it ideal for neutralizing threats regardless of size or strength differences.
The beauty of Jiu-Jitsu lies in its ability to empower individuals with the knowledge to defend themselves in real-life situations, whether standing or on the ground. This discipline builds confidence, sharpens reflexes, and enhances situational awareness—critical skills for anyone interested in personal safety.
Self-defense Jiu-Jitsu teaches individuals how to control and subdue opponents using joint locks, chokeholds, and positional control. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining composure and using an aggressor’s force against them, making it highly effective in real-world scenarios. Whether it’s learning to escape from a headlock, defend against a bear hug, or safely control an attacker from the ground, these techniques are designed to be practical and applicable.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and self-defense system that emphasizes grappling and ground fighting. Developed in Brazil in the early 20th century by Carlos Gracie, BJJ incorporates elements of Judo, Japanese Jujutsu, and other styles. The art promotes the idea that smaller individuals can defend themselves against larger opponents using leverage and precise techniques, including control, joint locks, and chokeholds.

Can you tell me about the history of Carlson Gracie Team and your head instructor? The Carlson Gracie Team was founded by Carlson Gracie Sr, the eldest son of Carlos Gracie, who played a pivotal role in the development of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Our head instructor, Alan Stockman, holds a 3rd-degree Black Belt under Carlson Gracie Jr, the only son of Carlson Gracie Sr. We are proud affiliates of the Carlson Gracie Team, carrying forward a rich legacy in the world of Jiu-Jitsu.

Am I too old to train Jiu-Jitsu?No, you are never too old to begin your Jiu-Jitsu journey. Jiu-Jitsu is an inclusive martial art for everyone. We have practitioners of all ages on the mats throughout the day, learning Jiu-Jitsu and gaining all of its benefits. Regardless of your age, physical limitations, or capacity, Jiu-Jitsu can be scaled to fit your needs.
-
Should I get in shape before I begin classes? No need to wait! Get on the mats. We offer classes tailored for beginners, such as the White Belt and Fundamentals classes, focusing on technique and drilling. These sessions are designed to help you learn and condition your body for advanced classes and live sparring. While some students incorporate additional strength and conditioning, our classes are structured to aid you in increasing fitness and achieving weight loss goals.

How does the belt system work in Jiu-Jitsu, and how long will it take me to earn rank? The Jiu-Jitsu belt system signifies proficiency and progress through a series of colored belts. For kids, promotions occur quarterly based on a combination of attendance and proficiency. The progression starts at white belt and includes four colors: Gray, Yellow, Orange, and Green. Each belt is further divided into three (Gray with White stripe, Solid Gray, Gray with Black Stripe), with up to four degrees earned before advancing to the next belt.

Why do we use a gi (uniform) and do I need anything else? The gi, or uniform, is an essential part of Jiu-Jitsu training. It differs from other martial arts uniforms, being heavier to withstand the pushing and pulling common in ground grappling. The gi serves as a valuable learning tool, teaching practitioners to be tighter in their techniques, have better weight distribution, and make fewer mistakes. While it's possible to learn Jiu-Jitsu without the gi, training with it accelerates improvement. For those with prior grappling experience, adapting to the gi may initially be challenging, but it enhances overall skills. Fitted mouthguards and groin protectors are recommended for safety. Many practitioners also choose to wear a rash guard (Under Armour) under the gi top and compression shorts under the gi pants. While gis are available for purchase at Stockman Jiu Jitsu, it's not mandatory to buy from us. We can assist you in finding the right gi that suits your preferences and needs, ensuring a comfortable and effective training experience.

Do you have beginner’s classes?Absolutely! Our White Belt Classes are specifically designed for individuals starting their Jiu-Jitsu journey on Day 1. In these classes, you will learn fundamental aspects such as positioning, basic techniques, and grips. The curriculum blends elements of Self Defense and Sport Jiu-Jitsu. As you attend regularly, you will notice a repetition of techniques from our White Belt Curriculum, allowing for a progressive and foundational understanding of Jiu-Jitsu. Next is the BJJ Fundamentals. In Jiu-Jitsu, there are thousands of techniques with many variations. It is impossible to put Jiu-Jitsu in a box and deliver it that way. For our Fundamentals class, we work in rotation through different positions such as mount, back, side control, knee on belly, turtle, guard, and more. We spend 2-4 weeks on each position, covering positional control, transitions, submissions, escapes, and more. While staying basic, this class allows instructors some freedom to help you attain a wider base of knowledge. Teaching techniques in sequences has proven to aid retention, so we always aim to teach sequentially to accelerate student learning.
-
Do you offer family discounts?Absolutely! We understand that each family is unique, with variations in the age and number of participants, as well as specific needs. To cater to the diversity of families, we offer family discounts on an individualized basis at the gym. How does a normal Jiu-Jitsu class run?A typical Jiu-Jitsu class at Stockman Jiu-Jitsu follows a structured format for optimal learning: Light Warm-Up: The class starts with a light warm-up, often through floor drills or light flow drills. Floor drills focus on individual Jiu-Jitsu movements on the mat, such as shrimping to develop crucial hip movement. Light flow drills involve specific technique training with a partner, building muscle memory and mastery of different Jiu-Jitsu techniques. Technique Instruction: Following the warm-up, the instructor introduces the technique of the day. This is taught sequentially, with students observing the instructor and then working on the movement with a partner. This phase emphasizes learning, and it differs significantly from live sparring. Partner Drills: Students practice the technique with a partner, allowing for hands-on application and refinement. This phase fosters a deeper understanding of the technique through repetition and controlled practice. Live Sparring (Rolling): Depending on the class level and focus, live sparring (rolling) may be incorporated. During this phase, students have the opportunity to apply the techniques learned in a live, dynamic setting. This helps bridge the gap between learning techniques and applying them in real-time situations. Throughout the class, instructors provide guidance, corrections, and support to ensure that students grasp the techniques effectively and safely. The structured approach aims to balance learning, practice, and application, contributing to a well-rounded Jiu-Jitsu education.
